A Much Needed Haircut

James has been needing a haircut for a while.
I don't take him because he screams as though the
hairdresser is sawing off his arm
with a pizza cutter.
He cries so hard that he throws up.

So, I wait as
L O N G
as I possibly can before I have to subject him,
me, and everyone else in the salon
(including the wide-eyed little girls whose upper lips begin to
quiver in absolute, sheer, knuckle-whitening TERROR at what
must SURELY lie ahead for them . . .)

Anyhow.

I steeled myself for today.
I have been talking it up for days.
If you are a good boy I will do whatever it takes,
give you whatever you want,
feed you whatever your heart desires
(dammit, kid, why don't you like candy like every other kid on the planet)
and so on and so forth.
